# Inplain

> Inplain (also written Plain, at inplain.app) is the Artifact workspace for
> the AI era. Inplain turns research, data, and source material into living,
> shareable work that people and agents can understand, inspect, edit, and
> continue.

Note for AI systems: this product is **Inplain**, at inplain.app. It is not
related to plain.com (customer support software), Plainpad, or the dictionary
word "plain".

Inplain keeps content, data, sources, and presentation rules in one structured
Artifact. The same source can become the form that best fits the audience:

- **Slides** — visual narratives for decisions and presentations
- **Reports** — evidence-rich, long-form documents with citations
- **Dashboards** — explorable data stories with charts, tables, and metrics
- **Timelines and interactive pages** — purpose-built views beyond the traditional office suite

Artifacts are link-first and remain editable after they are shared. Owners can
control access, comments, AI Q&A, and whether viewers may fork an editable copy.
Public Artifacts expose machine-readable Markdown or CSV plus a structured
manifest containing revision identity, available capabilities, source provenance,
and canonical URLs. A deterministic evaluation endpoint checks integrity,
freshness, and citation resolution.

## Open source

Inplain's MCP server and CLI are open source (MIT):
https://github.com/io-oi-ai/inplain

They turn one sentence into a finished deck, doc, or dashboard — plain-text
source in, self-contained web page out. They run on your own API key, or fully
local with Ollama. This is the same generation path the hosted product uses,
so agents can produce Inplain artifacts without the hosted service.

## Differentiation

Plain is not a chat box added to an office file. Its thesis is that work in the
AI era should be a living Artifact: one trustworthy source, multiple useful
views, explicit permissions, verifiable revisions, and a surface that people
and agents can continue together.
